Larry Lilly's Journal Little Things Mean a Lot: Waterloo Vol 19 Issue 8

The time was 4pm, the date 18 June 1815, the place Waterloo. "Vive l'Empereur!" was the cry from the French. The ground trembled from the pounding of 20,000 hooves of the French cavalry. Colonel Cornelius Frazer looked at the mass of riders coming up on both sides of the Brussels road and thought to himself: "They are going to roll over us." Quick as a flash, he ordered: "Form squares!" In minutes, the entire plateau of Mont St Jean was flooded with Marshal Ney's cuirassiers, wheeling madly around the British squares. If even just one of the British squares had given, Wellington would have been lost.
The squares held because only artillery could make infantry squares disintegrate. French guns couldn't fire without striking their own riders. But other guns were in place - the French had managed to capture the entire English artillery park during the mad ride. Colonel Heymes, Marshal Ney's aide, was at the artillery park when he heard the dull thunder of an approaching wave. It was Uxbridge's heavy cavalry approaching. Heymes had to act and act quickly in order to disable English artillery. "Les clous!" he yelled. "Nails! Spike the guns!" But not a single French rider had nails with which to spike the firing holes, and render the English artillery useless. A handful of nails to put these guns out of action, and nothing, not even the arrival of the Prussians, could have saved Wellington that day.
The Hinge Factor at Waterloo is almost too ironic. A handful of headless nails and a few hammers could have made a massive difference to the outcome of the battle.

To under estimate the importance of little is easy to do in our “big matters” world. Yet many big dreams have come to naught due to forgetting or ignoring the little things. I hope the book review by Joyce in this issue on Andy Andrews book The Little Things, moves you to buy it as chapter Two, like a few nails and several other articles, deal with the fact that if it were not for little things either remembered, forgotten or ignored, world history would be quite different.
Have you ever wondered about your life and the impact of the little things on your status in life?
Could it be that the life of others could have been different because of some simple little thing done or given by you to them, or indirectly through the avenue of Christian endeavor by a group or church?
The word, little, is used 215 times in the Bible. Many of the people, places and things labeled as little impacted biblical and world history. Please take the few minutes to grasp the power of these few people, places and things. They were and are life changing in the lessons taught.
The first, in my opinion towers over all the great accomplishments of history put together:
Bethlehem was/is one of the smallest towns in Israel, note what God says about this tiny spot on the map:
Micah 5:2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting."
One of the greatest events in Messianic history took place in this tiny burg! Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. God moved the entire Roman Empire to bring this prophecy of Christ’s birth to pass. Do not despise small town America, or any country. Only God knows the great things He has planned for some little spot in the road. You’re not Jesus Christ, but you may be the tiniest speck of humanity from your infinitesimally little town that God will use to put it on the map! Could be.
Consider this event:
Matthew 15:34 “Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven, and a few little fish."
Note the phrase, a few little fish! I have no idea how big the seven loaves were, but it’s safe to assume they were of ordinary size. With what was offered by the boy, Jesus Christ fed 4,000 men plus women and childrechildren. A little lunch made an enormous difference to Christ ministry in that place to the people. The song has it, little is much when God is in it! Never believe that what God has given to you is too insignificant to be used greatly in His work!
In many gospel songs, the church is typed as The Old Ship of Zion and many who attend little churches become prisoners of the erroneous thought, that due to the littleness of our church we cannot do much. May I remind you, Bethlehem was a little place. Note this from John:
John 21:8 “But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish.” WOW.
Revelation 3:8 "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.
Churches, groups of Christians lock on to the idea of little, weak, unable and thus spend their span of existence believing they have no purpose but to be there. Christians, regardless of the number, or littleness, have an enormous set of orders from our Commander in Chief. We do not, in ourselves have the power to accomplish much, but He knows our little strength and freely gives Holy Spirit power to magnify His strength despite our lack!
Even a nail can make the difference!! Give your time, talent and treasure to Christ. Your "little bit" given in love to Jesus Christ may matter far more than you think.
Here’s an old saw from Ben Franklin:
“For the want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost,
For the want of a horse the rider was lost,
For the want of a rider the battle was lost,
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe-nail.”
Make Today and your life count!! LML

The Little Things. Andy Andrews Thomas Nelson 15 chps, 163 pgs $17.99
The primary instruction states, “Why you really SHOULD sweat the small stuff!” Andy then hits a home run, actually 163 home runs. Each page is loaded with the importance of the small stuff.
Did you know that Napoleon won the Battle of Waterloo? It’s true. Andy shares this little known fact of history. Yet, right after winning the key, Napoleon’s army lost for lack of a few small things. The story starts on page 7. There are 15 fabulous stories and each one will touch you in some way. On page 13 Andy begins the story of why a Cougar Canyon High School could not take the name, “The Cougar Canyon Cougars” as their mascot! Seems like a done deal.
Cougar Canyon is in Utah and several places and even Brigham Young University claims “Cougars” as their mascot. The school board of Cougar Canyon decided the name, “Cougar Canyon Cougars” may offend “older women!” (This is true, you can’t make this stuff up)! The lesson in this chapter should be required reading by every American. America which is becoming widely known as the “home of the offended.” You will love this chapter. Chapter 19 is titled, “A Little Thing, like change.” Andy acknowledges; “Everyone wants things to get better. No one wants things to change.” He then destroys most arguments about how to implement change by sharing two small choices that speed up willingness to change to near Supersonic motion.
If you can only buy one book, get this one! JDL TgB.

Dear Bro. Lilly,
The Lord spoke to me last night and told me to send you $100, so I am doing it. We are doing pretty well. I am really having fun serving the Lord. I am going to teach one class, church polity and the 1st Semester of Summer School starting the last week of June. Normally, I teach 2 classes on Monday and Wednesday. This Fall, I will be teaching Bible Doctrines and Church History.
I get to preach every Sunday morning at 10:00 am at the Second Chance Ministry. They have 40-60 men, most of which have been in prison and are now out on probation. They are required by the State to stay in this facility. I told Pastor I was cheating because I get to preach every Sunday & teach two days a week, but he has to deal with all the problems because he is the pastor! J.&B.S.
Editor’s Note: This dear friend through thick and thin over many years continues to share his wife’s serious medical problems as well as his. He is joyful beyond measure that tests reveal he has no cancer! PTL. I was deeply moved by his statement concerning the Lord waking him up to send a sizable amount to help in this work! I am asking the Lord to “Wake up” more people with the same thought as J.S.

Nearly two decades ago I was introduced to Marie Linn through our mutual friend, Carol Hoikkala. Even though I was a prisoner on death row, Marie welcomed me lovingly into her beautiful heart and wrapped her mesmerizing friendship around me. She did not judge me of shy away from accepting me into her life; she simply embraced me with her love.
When Carol invited me to join her and Marie’s God ordained Christian Newsletter, “Hope for Your Heart,” as a contributing writer, Marie was instrumental in helping me to harness and project my best potential in literature writing. Through her skillful critiques and caring constructive criticism of my writing, she strengthened my reflections of God’s Word.
I am eternally grateful for her kindness towards me and for her willingness to guide me toward the betterment of myself. Marie friendship was a blessing to me.
God poured into her the gifts of holiness and phenomenal uniqueness. And thus, the wonderful essence of her lives on indelibly, in the sphere of this world, through all the souls she has touched, through her love and compassion. I will forever cherish her and her touch upon my life. Antoinette Frank.
Editor’s Note: Marie Ann Linn was an outstanding School Teacher and prison worker in the northern realms. You get some idea of her impact on women prisoners. LML
Brother Larry,
I need your opinion about the dogs we are training here at the prison. On Sunday prior to Memorial Day, one of the dogs, Sparky, was in the chapel attendance. The Chaplain prayed over Sparky as he was being assigned to a Veteran as a Service Dog. Some Brothers liked it and some did not. Each has an opinion. What do you think?
Editors Brief Opinion: As part of God’s Creation I pray for animals. After all we pray for Kings and other political types. God used an Ass in OT and has used many since! LML

God's Perfect Gifts Dale Byers
God’s Perfect Gifts Dale Byers
James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
God is a wonderful Father. He loves to give us gifts. They vary in form and nature but they are all perfect. They are never intended to be a substitute for Him, but they are gifts that represent and express His love and affection. Here are some of the gifts He has given to us.
Children are God’s Gifts- Psalm 127:3-5
“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.”
God gives perfect gifts. None of our children are perfect because they come from the loins of imperfect parents. However they are perfect expressions of God’s love for us. We learn something of how God loves us because of the love that we have for our children. They are also perfect expressions of what God is working in our lives. It is not until we are faced with the task of preparing our children for life that we comprehend the difficult task God has of forming us into mature, responsible adult people. Children do not automatically know how to feed themselves, or dress appropriately, or when to go to bed, or how fast to drive a car, or how to resist temptations, or how to make the many wise choices in life. I have found myself so many times as a parent, feeling like ‘I really blew it.’
The greatest struggles are when we sense our own failures as a parent. However, there is no greater joy than to see your children walking with the Lord and seeing them make wise choices. It is when the quality of their lives demonstrate those principles we have prayed would be evident in them and to see them learn from our mistakes and go on beyond what we accomplished (3Jn. 1:4). Then one day God calls them to the difficult task of parenting. When you see your children assume the responsibilities of parenthood and they struggle with that awesome task of preparing their children for life, and do a better job of it (2 Tim. 2:1-7). Then you understand a little more of the blessings of God’s gifts.
Pastors are God’s Gifts- Eph 4 Sufferings are God’s Gifts- Phil 1:29 Christ Was God’s Perfect Gift- Jn. 3:16, Heb. 2:10.
All of God’s Gifts must be broken before they can be used of God to bring blessings to others. A.W.Tozer: “It is doubtful that God can use a man mightily until He has wounded him deeply.”
A story is told of a singer with a beautiful voice but unsuccessful as a singer. A critic explained to her she must learn to sing with a broken heart.
How Do You Handle Ministry When God Breaks Your Heart? You will never handle ministry until God does break your heart. Then you will be more like Christ.

"The widow, and parents, remind us all that true giving, true sacrifice, is not of what we have left over, but of what we could use for our comfort or convenience if we didn't give it. Statistics on giving to charitable causes show that the poor widows still give the most: people of lower income give more proportionately than do the wealthy. As we recall the Lord's self-giving, we ask to be strengthened in our own willingness to give." Don Talafous.
I hope you will consider a donation to this ministry! As with most of the Lord's parachurch ministries, we do more than we can afford! Friends, like you help us to keep the work moving. Thank you for your consideration. You may mail your offering to:

EXTRA, EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! Transgenderism a Fraud!
Biological Masquerade Columnist Mike Pyatt
In 1953, Ex-GI, George Jorgensen, departed on a plane from New York City, to his ancestral home in Denmark. He later returned as “Christine” Jorgensen, following transgender surgery, becoming an overnight celebrity. Jorgensen insisted, “No one is a 100 percent male or female.” Generations later, the LGBTQ lobbyist declared war on world-renowned Johns Hopkins, former Chief Psychiatrist, Dr. John McHugh, a leading mental health expert speaking out against radical “gender ideology.” He’s the most celebrated mental health researchers in the past thirty years on the subject. Drawing their fire because he debunks the transgender ideology as a “biological meme.” A lone voice in the contemporary “psychiatric wilderness.”
In May, 2014, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services review board ruled that Medicare can pay for the “reassignment” surgery sought by the transgendered-those who maintain they can’t identify with their biological sex. Past Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that he was “open” to reviewing the ban on transgender individuals serving in the military. Current Defense Secretary James Mattis said earlier this year that he was “studying” the issue. President Trump’s recent tweet ended further speculation. According to Dr. McHugh, the transgender argument holds that one’s feeling of “gender” is a conscious, subjective sense that, couched in one’s mind, cannot be questioned by anyone.
Many individuals seek not just society’s tolerance of this “personal truth,” but demand we affirm it, thus the dictate for the government payment for medical and surgical treatments, and for access to all sex-based public roles and privileges. Advocates for the transgendered have persuaded several states, including California, New Jersey and Massachusetts, to pass legislation barring psychiatrists, even with parental permission, from attempting to restore natural gender understanding to minors. McHugh, and other researchers, challenged this veneer thin narrative.
Johns Hopkins, in the 1960’s, was the first American medical center to venture into “sex-reassignment surgery.” In 1970’s it launched a study comparing outcomes of transgendered people who had surgery with the outcomes of those who didn’t. Most of the surgically treated patients described themselves as “satisfied,” but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who hadn’t had surgery, according to McHugh. Johns Hopkins halted doing sex-assignment surgery, since producing a “satisfied, but still troubled patient,” was inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs. He cited a 2011, study at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden that produced the most illuminating results yet regarding the transgendered. McHugh cites it as evidence to give pause to such surgery. The 30 year study, followed 324 individuals who had sex-reassignment surgery. It revealed that commencing about 10 years after surgery, the transgendered began to suffer increasing mental difficulties. Most shockingly, “Their suicide mortality rate rose almost twenty-fold above non-transgender comparable population.”
McHugh reminds us, “Transgendered men don’t become women, they become feminized men ‘impersonators.’ Nor do transgendered women become men.” Whether it’s “Renee” Richards, former tennis player, who underwent male-to-female surgery, “Caitlyn” Jenner, or Private Bradley Manning, the convicted national security leaker, who now prefers “Chelsea” Manning-each are who they were biologically at birth. Observably uglier “women” with baritone voices, and feminized “men.” Few are shocked that this generation of young gender confused adolescents spawned by Internet chat rooms are falsely duped, believing a drastic physical change will banish their psycho-social dilemma.
Tragically those with gender confusion, seeking help, rarely find therapists willing to help them work out their conflicts psychologically efficaciously. Instead, they and their families find only “gender counselors” whose mission is to “encourage them in their sexual misassumptions.” McHugh added, “Both the state and federal governments are actively seeking to block any treatments that can be construed as challenging the assumptions and choices of transgendered youngsters.” Former senior advisor to our 44th President, Valerie Jarrett, advocated this radical social agenda, saying, “As part of our dedication to protecting America’s youth, this administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors.” No matter how dangerous, they wouldn’t permit youth under federal programs to be offered an alternative approach to their social dilemma. There’s a preponderance of evidence that “transgenderism” is psychological rather than a biological matter. The Huffington Post ardently dismissed McHugh’s claims as “delusional and transphobic.” Some former Johns Hopkins colleagues disagreed with his conclusions.
A recent Time Magazine cover displayed a transgender male in a red dress and high heels, titled The Transgender Tipping Point. It’s biologically false that anyone can exchange one’s sex. The LGBTQ advocates are well funded and politically savvy. However, within their own ranks, there’s division on embracing transgenders, despite their public rhetoric otherwise. They’ve funded LGBTI Research at Vanderbilt University to counter Dr. McHugh’s views, with support from “600 experts on LGBT health.”
Hawking a glossy cover photo of Jenner on Vanity Fair, with a caption, “Call me Caitlyn,” the false premise persists that one’s sexual nature is misaligned with one’s biological sex can be treated with therapy and medication, is squarely challenged by Dr. McHugh, insisting, “What is needed now is public clamor for coherent science-biological and therapeutic science-examining the real effects of these efforts to support transgendering.”
President Trump challenged conventional pandering when it comes to transgenders serving in the military, and sustaining associated medical costs. The American Psychological Association, the titular head for advancing a leftist social health agenda, oppose Trump’s call to bar transgenders from military service. In 2008, the APA adopted a resolution supporting full equality for transgenders. The same body that removed homosexuality from the DSM, as deviant behavior, in 1973, not from scientific research, but caved to influential Bay Area homosexual lobbyist.
McHugh offered sage advice, when opposing a cultural myth, “But gird your loins if you would confront this matter,” warning, “Hell hath no fury like a vested interest masquerading as a moral principle.” He believes medical accommodation to a transgender child is, “Like performing liposuction on an anorexic child.” If a plumber switches the hot and cold-water line, isn’t it still hot and cold water at the tap? Another casualty of a wayward culture driven solely by visceral fancy, absent any absolute boundaries. There may be debate on therapeutic science and methodology, as McHugh suggested. However, for most Evangelicals, transgenderism is abnormal, morally repugnant, and tragically doomed psychologically and socially, as they flounder to fill a vacuum-that only Jesus can fill. What do you think?
