On Being Heroic
In today’s world people really do worship someone they consider to be heroic. Some who receive this “worship” revel in being such a celebrity. Tragically even Bible believing people fall into this trap and seldom realize the folly of their praise toward a fellow human being.
The writer of the book of Hebrews clearly enumerates some laudable traits for heroes. Chapter 11:1-10, 13-16 are ones among many that are thrilling sagas of faith and courage. They happened thousands of years ago, but we who name Christ will do well to emulate them, even if we think that we are living rather boring lives!
Note the above mentioned verses and then comments on them on this short journey.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.
5 By faith, Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;
10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.
15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.
16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
True Heroes Trust God This truth is thrust on us in verses 1-3 as it is asserted that God is our Creator and not we ourselves. None of us were there when God spoke all there is into existence, yet the scripture proclaims it and we along with the “fathers” believe it to be so. A man not widely known as any sort of fundamentalist put it this way and thus set himself apart from many of the concepts he seemed to embrace. Ralph Emerson stated; “All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.”
When the subject of faith comes up the correlation between faith and trust is seen as one and the same. Trusting God as portrayed in scripture is a matter of faith, and utter trust is the differential between lost and saved, the defeated and the victor. Why? Because they that come to God must believe/trust that He is and is a rewarder of all who seriously seek him. The 19 Arab virgins that believed/trusted in Christ were burned to death rather than renounce Jesus and consent to the ISIS demand for consensual sex.
Trust Was Demonstrated by Abel’s Correct Sacrifice Vs 4. Trust keeps on believing God to death and beyond. The Cain syndrome has been in the heart of those who do not trust since the first family lived just outside Eden.
Trust is Demonstrated by a Simple Walk with God. Vs 5. The old country song had the question; Are you walking and talking with the Lord? Trust involves time with the one in whom we trust.
Trust Demonstrates Belief in The Reality of the Unseen. Vs 6-7. Noah had never seen rain, yet he trusted God was communicating truth to him for his own good and he acted in faith/trust. He did so for 120 years, with no affirmation until the day the flood came. Trust/faith will continue believing God for the future! This kind of faith endures often mind numbing routine and does so because faith/trust gives the example of the secret of the people in the scriptures upon which this short sermon is based.
Trust Believes Better Days Are Ahead Vs 13-16. The Bible gives us a number of images of something better in the listed verses. We may be ridiculed, persecuted unto death, we may become homeless as we obey the leading of Christ, we may be killed, yet there is a set star beckoning us along the heavenly way. The people of God are reminded in the verses of an inheritance beyond any earthly expectation. Abraham left a life of opulence to live in a foreign country, dwelling in tents, all the while trusting the city he was looking for was real and had solid foundations as God had promised!
Abraham and others confessed “this world is not my home; I am just passing through.” The God followers trust in the promise of a better, a heavenly home.
In these trying times it is good to recall a song written by the Nazarene preacher, Napoleon Vandall in 1894.
My Home Sweet Home Napoleon Vandall
Walking along life’s road one day,
I heard a voice so sweetly say,
“A place up in heav’n I am building thee,
A beautiful, beautiful home.”
Chorus: Home, sweet home, home, sweet home–
Where I’ll never roam!
I see the light of that city so bright–
My home, sweet home.
Loved ones upon that shore I’ll meet,
Casting their crowns at Jesus’ feet;
I’ll worship and praise Him for evermore
In my beautiful, beautiful home.
Life’s day is short–I soon shall go
To be with Him who loved me so;
I see in the distance that shining shore,
My beautiful, beautiful home.
We will do well to set our mind, heart and gaze upon that city John saw coming down in the book of Revelation and begin again to trust in the truth as set forth by our redeemer. There is a great day coming. LML

Letters & Comments
Hello Larry,
I’ve been receiving the Journal, with all the interesting messages…. Thank you for the good work you are doing for Christ! Giving hope and lifting hearts.
Our Christian life is a battle! But it’s called a “good fight.” I like that, because it has eternal purpose and God wins!
I had a brain aneurysm a few years ago. All went well. The perfect miracle I must say! He has “approved” me,. Been using me for the work of “refinement.” He’s been getting the church ready to go! When Jesus came the first time, John the Baptist said, “make your path straight” That’s what I tell prisoners, (Christians, men and women alike). I write to both.
Jesus is coming soon. May we offer His love and grace to those who will turn to Him.
1Samuel 12:24, 1Sa 12:24 "Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.”
Love and prayers, Live well! N.F.
Editor’s Note: Deep thanks to N.F. she has a wide ranging ministry to prisoners now for several years and is a Prayer Warrior and financial helper to this ministry. I admire her work and am thankful for the help to keep touching lives in and out of prison. The enclosed gift in her letter made a tremendous difference in this slow summer season. LML.

Dear Larry,
Your Journal has blessed me so much. I have been going though a rough time here in prison. I was reading and praying over that, the Journal has helped to bring peace to me.
Somehow, I don’t know how God works, but He provides for me those things that get my attention back on Him.
I play guitar in the Praise team here at prison and we are finally growing in the right direction. Please pray for us. Thank you and God bless for all that you do for Him!
Your Brother in Christ, G.T.
Editor’s Note:
G.T. is a Christian who walks with God in a dark place. His light shines bright. We can learn a lot from our Brothers and Sisters in Christ who are serving Him while bound with the chains of incarceration. I meet so many professing Christians who are going to serve Jesus, when things get better, when able to go some place else, etc. The only place you can serve Jesus is wherever you happen to be! Get with it! LML

Pastor Larry,
God bless you! Pray for me, I am going through some trials and I know our Lord has the answer. I want to help others, with the love of Christ in that resides in my heart. Thank you for caring.
Love always, R.C.
Editor’s Note: R.C. is a dear saint, 86 years of age, who just a few years ago moved to the location of a prison in order to minister to the prisoners. She actually lived in her car for sometime to do this. Her heart is in the work of Jesus and she is living proof that we are not to old to serve Jesus. Her commitment to the work of Jesus in the prisons brings a tear to my eye. It also encourages me to renewed fervor to serve Jesus with Joy and Gladness, in spite of Satanic opposition! LML.

The Book Worm's Corner Comments From/About Helpful books Joyce Lilly

Soul Survivor How Thirteen Unlikely Mentors Helped My Faith Survive The Church. Philip Yancey. Doubleday. 13chp 330 pages. Amazon ETC.
Soul Survivor notes 13 chapters, yet the acknowledgement and prefaces sections are far more interesting than most books. I doubt that any of our readers will agree with every conclusion of Yancey, yet everyone is thought provoking, as are the thirteen people he selected as mentors. Philip never met a few of the mentors, but delved into their life via their writings. Larry, I could wring his neck, has folded the corner of nearly every page, but he rendered the chapter on G.K. Chesterton almost unreadable with his folding and marking.
Chesterton wrote, “I am ordinary in the correct sense of the term, which means the acceptance of an order, a Creator and the Creation, the common senses of gratitude for Creation, life and love as gifts permanently good, marriage and chivalry as laws rightly controlling them…”
Mr. Yancey says: “Under his influence I too realized the need to become more “ordinary.” I had conceived of faith as a tight-lipped, grim exercise of spiritual discipline, a blending of asceticism and rationalism in which joy leaked away. Chesterton restored to me a thirst for the exuberance that flows from a link to the God who dreamed up all things that give me pleasure.”
The chapter on Dr. Paul Brand, of the Carville Center for Hanson’s Disease (Leprosy) is worth the price of many books. The influence of Dr. Brand propelling Philip to renewed faith is mind boggling. Philip states; “It is indeed possible to live in modern society, achieve success without forfeiting humility, serve others sacrificially, and yet emerge with joy and contentment. To this day, whenever I doubt that, I look back on my time with Paul Brand.”

ARTICLE OF THE MONTH!
To make progress in any career takes what we last talked about, tenacity. You would be hard pressed to find a more important word to define a necessity in achievement. One of the first women to receive a Noble Prize (1911-1913 in two fields) Madame Curie, commented on this:
"I was taught that the way of progress is neither swift nor easy." Marie Curie
Marie was born in Warsaw, Poland, so much for the old Polish jokes, and she and her husband worked tenaciously leading to the discovery of polonium and radium without which our world would be drastically different.
We Christians have become so enthralled with the world around us that we have bought into the idea of "instant everything." It's surprising to me that some scientist isn't working on inventing three-month gestation for human children. That we expect an instant answer to our prayers is attested to by the fact that so many people quit or decrease fervency when after once or twice offering a prayer that is still left unanswered. One reasonably famous preacher wrote about never asking in prayer for something more than once! I have no idea which translation he read.
Very few undertakings actually "take off" on the first effort, but require repeated adjustments, that demand fervency of effort. It is well noted that most ultimate failures include enthusiasm in the initial effort, but as time marches on, while more efforts are made, the fire grows cold and soon the idea is laid to rest. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you tried again, with updated knowledge and perhaps modernized equipment, with near nuclear enthusiasm?
Mrs. Curie, was so totally committed to her life work, actually obsessed, she eventually contracted a type of cancer associated with radiation and passed this life. He daughters prayers for her are near the stuff of legend.
Being obsessed may not be a good thing unless it is what Lloyd Douglas called The Magnificent Obsession, which is what serious Christians are to have. You really should read this classic book.
Solomon gives this "heart" advice in Proverbs 3:5,
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;"
Learning the secret that worthwhile things usually take time, commitment and adjustment is one mark of growing maturity. If you fail to accept this truth, you will use your life in vain, starting this and that with most efforts rusting on a junk pile somewhere.
It is clear that we have been sold a bill of goods about Jesus, the government and all associated entities being here for the sole purpose of making life easy.
Keep on dreaming! LML.

Here's a note from my Pastor of many years, Dr. Tom Wallace concerning the above article.
"I am sitting on a balcony of my room at a motel looking over at the new World Trade Center and the Empire State Building in NYC and enjoying your article about Madame Currie. After preaching Sat. Nite and four times Sunday I am going up to Long Island for five more sessions in a large Spanish work. Recently I have been in Seven Spanish churches. I am just about ready to learn Spanish. Joe Boyd did in his eighties. I will be 86 on August 22. If Joe could do it, I can do it. Your challenges are helping me to decide to go with it. They tell me that by memorizing about 300 words I could communicate pretty well. Glory is Gloria in Spanish and many of the words are that simple. Give my love to The great blond and have a great day. Dr. Tom Wallace."
