We are told in no uncertain terms by Solomon to make a practice of paying whatever price believing the truth may demand. Here’s his word on the subject:
Proverbs 23:23, “Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.”
Most people with whom I associate fully believe that they believe the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This is very good for their less than energetic thought life. Notice what Count Leo Tolstoy wrote about the folly often dove into by seekers of truth who are for many reasons suffering from self-delusion.
"I know that most men...can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives." Leo Tolstoy.
In most, if not all religious groups, there are a few, if not more, ideas that run publicly unchallenged by the mass of believers within said group. Yet, in the inner sanctum of the heart of the analytical thinkers, the scriptural truth about the idea, the teaching, is put to rest as partially or totally false.
When discussing such ideas/teachings, I learned long prior to being converted to carefully watch a person’s eyes, for there a lightning fast flicker can reveal a thought, a thought that if put into words would state something like this: “I know what you are saying is true, but if I were to publicly take that position, I would lose everything.” The phrase, “Well, you know we have to go along to get along.” Such should never be mentioned when truth is on the table.
Many men are satisfied to live with the approval of the crowd, the crowd being of their particular group. Others, demand of themselves a clear conscience when they mention something as being true, true in their minds based on some valid authority.
Much of the vacillation among Christians is due to an unsettled faith, a faith, but one founded on what Dr. Fuzzy Wuzzy says rather than on “Thus saith the Lord.” Years ago Theodore Epp performed a great service to the Body of Christ via his radio ministry titled, Back to The Bible. Yet, even though he meant well he wavered on some issues due to a refusal to consider all the facts on a few particular issues of the day. I hope I am not following the same path. All scripture is given by God and must be factored into any conclusion affecting the saints whom we are teaching.
Like Solomon said, pay any price necessary for the truth and do not sell it for any price.
