At my fifth year of age we moved into a house with electricity, indoor plumbing and a TELEPHONE! The phone was primitive and thus simple. You simply lifted the phone from its cradle, the operator asked, “Number please?” You then told the 2digit number to the operator and she, (real men were not telephone operators, today maybe) would then plug wires into a switch board and you would talk to whomever answered. Our most asked for number was, “64 please.” 64 was the Sheriffs number. I don’t recall ours. If you happened to forget the number, you could just state the name of the person and the operator usually knew the number and would make the connection.
As to change, think about this from Will Rogers:
“Kansas, while blessed with its grasshoppers, must endure its politicians.”
While Telephones have changed, politicians are still pretty much the same. I recall election days in my childhood as comedic at best. By my age of seven, my mother was a widow. To earn extra money any legitimate way she could, Mom was a help to politicians each election. The Democrats would pick up Mom and other folks around the neighborhood, take them to the polls, give each one $5 and bring them home. In the afternoon, along came the Republicans and the same routine was carried out, the only difference being the voting location. Back then men with families worked for 40 cents an hour, so you can see our families were high wage earners on election day!
Of course things have changed in our country and I feel for the poor folks. Due to serious controls, the way Mom made a good living, at least a few times every few years, is now no longer in use. I hear where in Chicago people, rich and poor alike, can still make small fortunes by the wise selling of their votes. Things change, but not all that much. The slogan, Vote Early and Often, lives.
Things haven’t changed much since Adam got us kicked out of Eden. Adam came out of Eden with a sinful heart, which has passed down to each and every human. Politicians with Adamic heart, buy the votes of impoverished or greedy Americans. They are able to do this because Americans also have hearts that are handed down in a sinful condition from Adam. The politicians and voters are cut from the same cloth, so we, as did the people of Will Roger’s day, must enjoy the grasshoppers while enduring the politicians.
Even more troubling is the truth that we must endure our crooked selves.
I believe it was the swamp dweller, Pogo, who surmised years ago, “We have discovered the enemy and he is us.” Raw-boned truth if ever it was spoken!
The theologians posit that “a people get the leaders they deserve.” Wow. This should give those who believe that God has changed the heart of Christians from Adamic to Christic, pause for thought. As Christ hearted people we must vote for Godliness, without considering the cost.
I find great hope in knowing that Christians, as a block will do the right thing, in the morning and afternoon voting journey.
