If you’re concerned about the turmoil in our country, note this:
“To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoy. In proportion as the genuine effects of Christianity are diminished in any nation, either through disbelief, or the corruption of its doctrines, or the neglect of its institutions; in the same proportion will the people of that nation recede from the blessings of genuine freedom…
Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government, and all the blessings which flow from them, must fall with them.” Jedadiah Morse, 1779 quoted in The Heaven Rescued Land; The History of The U.S.A. Dr. Phil Stringer.
The above is borrowed in the hopes of helping Americans at large to grasp the importance of correct thinking from a theological perspective. For many years a favorite saying in our nation was simple and to the point, “as goes the home, so goes the nation.” The statement became well worn, and our people largely became weary of the sometimes tedious business of minding the home. Personal care for children by the biblically designated parties, slowly eroded to this all important function passing to paid delegated parties. This practice does free the biblically designated father and mother for other things, but we are discovering that the delegated parties are not a fit substitute for God’s way.
One of the marks of the downfall of the civilization of Noah’s day was the adults had become men and women without natural affection. This lack of natural affection is expressed in the inability to truly love, as natural affection is cultivated personally by people who possess natural affection, as God communicates His love through the hearts and minds of adults who’s minds and hearts are in tune with Him and His plan as given in His word.
Our nation has near in Toto thrown off our God of divine affection for the mindless silliness of failed societies, thus inviting the same misery faced by said societies.
The truth be known, without a moral foundation, a guiding compass of fairness and honesty, any society by any name is doomed for the scrap heap of history. The Christian faith by and large was the guiding light; it’s agreed many of the men working in the light were themselves misguided. In spite of human flaws our nation rose to the highest pinnacle yet reached in world history. Our United States was the bearers of the brightest light to ever shine on a nation of laws rather than a land of kings supposing themselves to be law incarnate.
Mrs. Davis, our third grade teacher, spent hours wrestling with how to teach some wild poverty stricken boys the intricacies of the beauty of Lex trumping Rex. The idea of Lex, the law, being superior to Rex, the leader made sense to me and more so now. America is supposed to be a land guided by law and everyone from the top to the most hopeless man or woman is to obey the law. I feel certain if the dead can roll over in the grave, Mrs. Davis is setting records for RPM. Congress makes laws from which they are exempt. Our presidents choose which laws they will not obey. And the man in the street…
The hope of our nation or any nation is the renewing of the principles clearly taught by Jesus Christ concerning our relation to God, to our families, to our neighbor and to those who lead us. We are to be about this business studiously seeking to do the good and abhor the evil of our or any given Zeitgeist currently in vogue.
“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,” Ephesians 5:15.
