Joyce and I were talking with one of her friends over lunch at a sidewalk café in Wilmington, DE some years ago. As we engaged in talking and eating, I eating, they talking, a man who appeared to be homeless among other problems walked by. You could smell him. He bore the gory marks of a life in the street and hidden places.
I remarked, he sure is a sight to behold. The woman we were with jumped in with, “Larry, if you could see the marks inside of me you would think that man is a Hollywood male model.” (I doubt that our friend knew much about such men, but I knew what she meant).
The man walking by with his plight on display drew a prayer, a thought and small financial token from our table. He had not asked. His need was on display. I remember watching people walking by as the ladies talked. As much as women talk, it is amazing to me that the world fails to cease operations. The statement of our friend lingers in my mind and the statement was made around 30 years ago.
“Marks inside of me…”
When I was converted to Jesus 52 years ago a saying was making the rounds: “Who is going on inside of you is more important than what is going on around you.” The “Who” is Jesus. Colossians 1:27, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” In part.
