We often talk about the game of life. An old song has a phrase, “Many a tear has to fall, but it’s all in the game.” I know of no philosophy that says otherwise. The Italian people I knew in my youth had a saying that has never left me. See what you think:
“After the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box." Italian Proverb
Of course there is more to life than tears and death. How could we live if not for love, laughter, achievement, the giggling of children? Many learn over the years that the things which make us cry bring a smile later on when the painful events have passed and we have learned the lessons. Pain often has a smile hidden inside.
Early in life I had no use for religion and less for religious people. My idea was they were a bunch fools pretending death was not real. I never knew the kind who understood that Christ was also there for the tears and made the smiles brighter.
As much as most of us love life and dream of better status via things, accomplishments and the like, we know that when we cross Jordan, the metaphor for death, the king and the beggar stand side by side. The only hope the poorest and the richest among us have is Christ in us the hope of glory. He is enough.
