6-24-13 Where the Big Fish Swim
When bank robber Willie (the actor) Sutton was asked why he robbed banks he answered, “Because that’s where the money is.” (Sutton denied this).
Getting a little closer to where I’m going with this, note William Faulkner’s line about high achievers, “You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.”
Faulkner, probably unaware, was teaching the truth taught by Jesus about successful ventures. A few years ago the Great Blonde and I were watching men, and a few women, fish along the Gulf Coast. They walked along the beach and actually caught several fish, each about six inches long. I noticed after a few days that we saw no one catching anything to write home about.
I recalled that as a Maryland runaway teen in the far off state of California, some friends and I had taken a freight train ride from San Fernando to Port Hueneme. While there a fishing boat docked and a man had caught a Black Sea Bass in the Pacific Ocean weighing over five hundred pounds! The wooden fishing pier was littered with the six inch variety Joyce and I noticed on the Gulf Coast.
Jesus taught the folly of fishing in shallow water if you want to catch the big one. Luke 5:4, “Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.”
