While browsing through a book of quotes, the one I want to share with you is what I call a “leaper,” meaning it leaped off the page into my mind. Having chewed on it for a few days I think it will help me to make a crucial point with you, not only about small children, but children of the Lord at any age.
Here’s the statement. See what you think.
“Children are barometers of the chaos that exists within their lives.” Asa Don Brown
It’s obvious that the chaos that exists within any life will reveal its presence in some way, and some of the ways may be violent to the max. The media carries some story of a person or persons doing horrible things, and as bits and pieces of the their life comes out, the chaos in their life tells a story of inner torment. This torment is often the result of unresolved conflict between two opposite thoughts on how to get even for wrongs perpetrated against them, recently or when they were younger.
The strange thing about inner chaos is it does not diminish with time, but a failure to resolve the conflicts creates more conflict and ultimately the chaos explodes. The younger, less mature at any age, haven’t learned to mask the chaos, and their actions telegraph that trouble, serious trouble, lies just under the surface. More mature people often, rather than facing the cause of the inner turmoil, repress the feeling, and thus the chaos grows until it reaches the point of explosion. Only the Lord knows what may happen at that time.
The Bible via many of its writers deals with the “how” of releasing the emotional pressure caused by chaos.
In his farewell to the Corinthians Paul said, 2 Corinthians 13:11 “Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.”
Several peace inducing truths are given here: Become mature, as Joan Rivers was noted for shouting, “Oh, grow up!” This is good advice as outgrowing childish responses to life is necessary for a healthy life and relationships. It is also good practice to accept the comfort, actually, courage, offered to you by Christ. As to “one mind,” James warned of the unstable life of a double minded person. Live in peace has to mean learning to give and take in life and learning that the world isn’t going to end if you fail to get in the last word. When these practices are implemented, with God’s help, the chaos suffered even by a true blue child of God, will give way to the “peace” that Christ gives.
Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
