Over the years I have often been amazed at the insight some unbelievers have into the simple truth of the purpose for which Christ came. For instance, Will Durant, the kindly minded, but socialist, Columbia professor and author of the voluminous The Story of Civilization. In Caesar and Christ, Dr. Durant said: “Caesar hoped to reform man by changing institutions and laws. Christ wished to remake institutions and lessen laws by changing men.”
A glance or life-long study reveals that even the church at large joins with unbelievers in furthering the attempt of Caesar rather than Christ. All you have to do is read the news releases of the socially oriented believers and the school of thought embraced is clearly evident.
While confessing consternation at Bible believers unknowingly promoting Caesar’s program, I am even more amazed at the practice of mixing the two, thus creating a totally ineffective and unworkable system.
Joshua clearly explained the difference at the close of his life, reminding the Jews that the choice is always between God and Caesar by whatever name the Caesar spirit masquerades.
Joshua 24:15, And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
