Freedom of speech is and has been under attack. Most hold to the concept of being able to express themselves about any subject in Creation. The belief is accompanied by the conviction that no consequence should be suffered because of what they say.
Historically Baptists held the belief of Soul Liberty long before the constitution of the United States. It was taught by just about every group of Baptists. It was not practiced historically nor in the present. We accept the truth of the teaching, yet within a close-knit body such as the local church, severe limits are, of necessity, placed for the sake of harmony else there would be pandemonium at each meeting.
Free speech comes down to being willing to pay the price for what you believe. If what you think and is a preference, you are in for a rude awaking if you go against the groupthink. If you have a conviction about the subject so firm that you will go to the stake, it’s admirable, but get a small sack of black powder to fit around your neck.
In our day the concept of “You must NOT offend me with your speech,” seems to rule our speech. In political and religious matters anything you say will be considered offensive to someone. So, what to do?
An internationally famous Muslim states this truth:
“What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.”
The freedom to teach biblical truth is infringed upon in many places. The scriptural truth that marriage is between one man and one woman is offensive. We must show the truth anyhow. The lifestyle of the drunken addict is mostly accepted, yet biblically oriented teachers must point out what scripture teaches concerning this. The destructive lifestyle of the “Gay” community is roundly rebuked in the scripture and “Gays” find this scripture genuinely offensive. The long list continues to touch the bulk of Western Civilization.
The physical Resurrection of Jesus is offensive, His substitutionary sacrifice on Calvary for the sins of the world is offensive to those who attempt, futilely, to earn salvation.
We who believe such truth must continue to share the fact, in a none-offensive tone, all the while knowing the truth is offensive to those who do not agree!

Here's a glowing Comment on my new booklet Amazing Grace 8 Essentials for Growth from a friend of many years; Dr. Paul Gordon:
I read your great book, and here are my comments about it.
“All of the Bible is God’s word, but some parts stand our like mountains above the plains. Bro. Larry Lilly took one of those mountains (2 Peter 1.5-8) and added depth, understanding, and luster to an already beautiful picture of mature Christianity. Anyone applying these verses to his life will find himself rejoicing in the richness of God’s spiritual wealth.”
Let me quote R.G Lee when he was preaching in Highland Park Baptist Church and said publically to Pastor Lee Roberson, “Let’s me and you get together and we’ll give the devil the devil.”
