Grammy Joyce took Dawn and the grandchildren children and me, (me was dragged) to Tilson Hall at ISU to again see the farcical musical, Miracle on 34th Street. Years ago I noted the production has enough syrup to supply iHop for years. As the production progressed an older woman, must have been mid-fifties at least, said with surprise in her voice, “This really isn’t about Santa Clause is it?” I remarked, “Hardly.”
I recall a child saying “Jesus and Santa Clause are like each other, ain’t they” This was over 40 years ago. If you knew her family you would understand her confusion.
Around the same time frame a cartoon was making the rounds picturing a boy walking along with another boy stating, “Well, we found out the truth about Santa Clause, I’m looking into Jesus next.” The point being that if parents lie to their children about one thing, they may be lying about something else. Could be.
A study of civilization prior to Christ reveals very little grace and love within the varied cultures and the Nordic ones, the Vikings, which produced “Santa” were as brutal as the rest. The Jewish Culture had the truth of a coming Messiah who would establish peace, where weapons would be beaten into plowshares, and when God’s precepts were followed in spirit, women had equal space and children were precious.
Luke 2:14, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
