While glancing at the political harangues last week it became apparent that we Americans are being deprived of at least a few demonstrations of simple and sincere humility. A search, a brief one, on Google brought this:
“Humility must always be the portion of any man who receives acclaim earned in the blood of his followers and the sacrifices of his friends.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower
It should be obvious that this genuine statement of a man humbled by the enormity of WWII and carnage of the war on the entire world moved me to near tears. As a student (Ha) in Elementary School I proudly wore the pin, “I Like Ike” though I had no idea why other than I had heard that Mr. Stevenson had once visited a Nudist Colony. This was enough difference for any sensible American in those days.
I admit to being impressed with the unusual humility demonstrated by President Eisenhower. I would that his tribe would increase. I also recognize a need for a tad of work personally.
The Oxford Don, C.S. Lewis stated:
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” C.S. Lewis.
In my opinion the best definition by a human.
In Christ we have the ultimate:
“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:8
