One of my favorite songs has the phrase “I’m possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure, since Jesus came into my heart.” Hope is based on the integrity of the person in whom you hope. I have found it’s better to “hope in Christ” than in any human or organization.
Commenting on hope Anne Lamott stated:
“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don't give up.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life
The principle is firmly rooted in the Bible. When all seems lost you do what you are supposed to be doing and keep on doing it and then suddenly, there it is, the light, the flash of knowledge and you have renewed power to work on through the dark, but a dark night in which God’s hope is energizing you on the inside.
Anne was applying the truth to her profession as a writer, but it works for anyone attempting to follow God’s will. Paul and Silas praised God in the Philippian Jail, Daniel in the Lion’s Den and Christ in the wine press of Gethsemane. Get with what you know and the unknown will be revealed.
Proverbs 13:12 “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.”
