All things considered, most women are good mothers, under the circumstances in which they are forced to labor. Biblically speaking, mothering is a full time career. Thus, even when mothering labors under the term “full time mother” there are still more than a few mountains to climb. It pains Joyce, the bride of my youth, to hear a vibrant, but dog tired, mother express, “Oh, I’m just a housewife.” Sometimes you get the idea that being a wife to a house is not all that big a deal! Contrary to a large percentage of people, women are supposed to be married to men, not brick and mortar, or, here it comes, a paycheck.
Please do not hang up, there’s more to this little rant.
In preparing the perennial Mother’s Day sermon from Proverbs, where King Solomon brags on his mother, Bathsheba, we preachers usually overlook one glaring thing about the wonder of the woman of chapter 31.
Proverbs 31, just so delicately, teaches that the secret of wonder woman’s success is built on a solid relationship with her husband. To top it off, the chapter gives credit for much of the husband’s success to Wonder Wife! (I really hope and pray this article gets and keeps me out of the doghouse).
There’s no hint in Solomon’s praise of his mother that he heard such statements as, “Well David, honey, all you ever think about is killing giants and sitting in the high place of the city.” Rather she communicated to David, that she really believed the old giant killer had what it took to not merely climb the king ladder, but to actually make a difference that helped the nation from the lowest to the highest person. When the chips really got down it was she, Bathsheba, who led the coalition that saved David’s bacon. (I know, being Jewish, they did not care about bacon). Purists! Ugh!
It would be more than a little profitable to re-read Proverbs 31 and take more than a glance and thus note the tremendous wisdom of this woman. Tremendous wisdom is code for “She played him like a Stradivarious.”
Just the other day the media noted that a certain airline got some complaints over refusing to permit a female violinist to carry her violin worth twenty million dollars with her into the passenger’s section. When husbands start responding to the Little Woman’s desire as does the $20 million smackers violin, she the woman, will most likely want to carry him around, treating him as of much more value than a cultured pearl.
Due to the fact of our girl being of super strong moral character, her hubby, being of a lesser moral fiber, knew down deep that she was the superior one in spiritual things, he trusted her totally. This trust freed her to do the right thing in business, in being certain the children were well clothed and fed, and was pretty good at investing and using the increase to create even more revenue streams. Look for yourself.
The wife of mine, for coming up on 52 years, is a Proverbs 31 woman. I received my Y.D. under her tutelage.
