I enjoy reading; not only the reading that I think will give an edge to me in my calling, but for the sheer joy of it. Reading has been and is a serious part of my life. Joyce, entrusted to me by Jesus, also loves to read and has her nose and often heart, stuck in a book. She reviewed a book by Charles Stanley twice. Her reason? “Not everyone has read it yet.”
Like anyone who loves reading, I have found my lot in life deeply enriched and therefore attempt to read only well written material. One problem is the truth of the old saying, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” On occasion I have read books on which the cover was less than intriguing and found them to be great, at least in my opinion. Surely you have discovered the same.
A gifted author of an earlier era, Jonathan Swift, made an intriguing comment concerning the importance of learning the art and beauty of living:
“May you live every day of your life.”
Jesus Christ said essentially the same thing when He uttered this in John 10:10b, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
Albert Barnes said, “Abundance: not bare existence-- but those superadded things which are needful to make that life eminently blessed and happy. Jesus gives eternal joy, peace, the society of the blessed, and heaven+”
