The white board in the prison chapel had written upon it a quote that immediately arrested my attention due to its encapsulating a series of thoughts that had been running through my mind most of the day.
Let’s share the quote and then my take on it and why it’s such an important statement:
“I would argue that nothing gives life more purpose than the realization that every moment of consciousness is a precious and fragile gift.” Steven Pinker.
Now to save you time and effort, yes I am aware of the lack of faith held my Mr. Pinker. Yet, it is noticeable in most literature that truth leaps off the page bearing biblical truth. If you have trouble correlating the quote with many scriptures, please learn to follow the instructions of Paul to Timothy and study to show thyself approved…
As to purpose a study of scripture will cause awareness not only of the absolute beauty of life, but also of the brevity thereof. Earthly life is, when all is said and done, a vapor that appears for a short while. We are also taught to make this brief walk in physical life count, by using our time wisely, for as Franklyn said, it is the stuff of life.
It is an observable fact the myriads of men and women walk through life unmindful of the beauty of the earth. Little notice is given to the wonder of a new born child, or the captivating mystery of a 65-year long marriage. One of the wonders of my life has been observing four children grow to adulthood, somehow surviving the struggles of total dependence on responsible adults and the upheavals of the teen years, on to marriage and their own families, bringing the wonder of grandparenthood, which brings the quiet wonder of watching the shenanigans of the grandmother.
David gives us brief insight into the wonder of it all in Psalm 139 in its entirety. Check these few gems from the Psalm also used last week as a cure for pouting!
Psalm 139:14 “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.
17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them!”
Spend a few weeks pondering these four verses and renew in your mind and heart the terrible carnage being wrought in our country for the expediency of the moment.
