You never know what may pop off the page when you engage in reading something outside of your professional tomes. I read material that is essentially biblical related, and for a break just about anything that may appear to be interesting. Such was the case as I read a short article handed to me by my friend of 40 some years, Wes Gates. The piece is from BreakPoint, from Colson Center for Christian Worldview. The title of the article, Survey Finds Most American Christians Are Actually Heretics. A few lines from Eric Metaxas and a few others swiftly prove the point of title.
Here’s a line from a Christian from India crafted to help get us on the ball concerning biblical orthodoxy. See what you think:
“The Bible created the modern world by making the West a reading and thinking civilization, and by grounding this reading and thinking in the idea that truth is knowable.”
That some Bible reading men and women from different countries were aware of Biblical truth that impacted all of life is well documented throughout World History.
Certainly you have heard the tormenting trials of Columbus as he tried to convince the ignoramuses that the world is round instead of flat. You may also cling to these four ancient thoughts: One, before the first voyage people thought the world was flat. Two, when Copernicus wrote that the Earth revolved around the Sun, this idea supposedly emanated from nowhere. Three, the “scientific revolution” of the seventeenth century invented science as we know it. And four, false beliefs and impediments to science are Christianity’s fault.
On the contrary, Rodney Stark points out in his book, For the Glory of God, every educated person of Columbus’s time, especially Christian clergy, knew the earth was round.” More than 800 years before Columbus’s voyage, Bede, the church historian, taught this, as did Hildergard of Bingen and Thomas Aquinas. The title of the most popular medieval text on astronomy was Sphere, not exactly what you would call a book that said the earth was flat.”
Oral Deckard, Proofer: (In 240 BC Eratosthenene calculated the circumference of the Earth to less than 1% error. Round or Flat was not an issue then). (During the Dark Ages, when the Catholic Church wielded governmental power, one heretic was quoted as saying, “I have more faith in shadows than in the church, for I have seen the shadow of the Earth on the Moon.”).
As to Copernicus’s idea, L. Bernard Choen, called that idea “an invention of historians.” Copernicus was taught the essential fundamentals leading to his model by his Scholastic Professors.” (Christian scholars). In 1952 Billy Graham quoted Arnold Toynbee, “The future of the world rests with the United States.” In those years Europe had for the most laid aside the Bible and Russia was presented as God riding in wheelbarrow being thrown out of the Soviet Union. A song of that era had the phrase, “They locked God outside the Iron Curtain, on old Satan they have placed the kingly crown. But this evil nation will never find salvation til God tears the Iron Curtain down.”
