The late Alex Karras, NFL Hall of Famer, said this about what matters most in life:
“Toughness is in the soul and spirit, not the muscles.”
This is an unlikely statement from a man who made his career using a lot of muscle. But when you think about it, many men and women have adequate muscle on the skeleton, yet few of them are in the Hall of Fame. There is something inside that causes the muscle mass to execute more exactly and often.
This truth spans all endeavors, whether the activity is sports, education, sales, or the calling to service politically or pastorally.
Zig Ziglar often repeated the story of an unusually wise balloon vendor in Central Park. As he was hawking his helium filled balloons, he felt a tug on his pantleg. He looked and saw a little kid. The child was about 8 years old and black. The child having the vendor’s attention, asked;
“Mr. will the black balloon go as high as the red one?” The vendor thought for a split second and said, “Yes it will Sonny, it’s not the color, it’s what’s inside that counts!”
Alex Karras said it well and his achievements along the course of his life bear it out.
The genius, well one among many, is expressed by the Apostle Paul, bearing out the truth that the inside dynamic makes the difference with this gem:
Colossians 1:27 “To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
The Holy Spirit in the ignorant and unlearned fisherman etc. made the difference in the knowledge of Christ “turning the world upside down.”
It can make the difference in your life.
