The weekend past was chock full of aviation related information. While I was concerned about each, the one that arrested my attention involved a family from Illinois traveling home from Florida and crashing a Piper Seneca into a wooded area at night.
Investigators are working intensely to determine the cause. Marty Gutzler, wife, Kimberly, daughter 9 year old Piper and cousin 14 year old Sierra Wilder lost their lives in the crash. Seven year old daughter Sailor was injured but managed to exit the wreckage and walk, barefoot, in the dark of night, through the woods about ¾ mile to the first house she came to. The home owner called 911. Sailor is home with family and doing well physically.
She told an interviewer that her daddy, Marty, had trained the family, including her, how to open exits and escape if something ever went wrong. Her training at her father’s hand paid off.
As I read and watched the accounts of this amazing story I thought of a phrase I read a few weeks ago by teacher, author and amazing woman with the same grandparents as Richard Nixon.
Please note this from her pen:
If you train people properly, they won't be able to tell a drill from the real thing. If anything, the real thing will be easier. Jessamyn West
Training won’t prevent all possible accidents, but it will help you to live through many. When engines are failing in a dark and stormy night over mountainous wooded areas, well, you get the idea. It will take expert training, iron nerves and at least a wee touch from God’s hand to walk away from an emergency dead stick landing, at night. Yet, training did result in a 7 year old girl miraculously surviving the crash and walking away. Many people survive a wilderness crash and later die due to being trapped or unable to exit the wreckage. I salute Sailor for paying attention to the training she accepted from her dad. I also join many and say a prayer for this special little girl.
Many are involved in wrecked lives due to a failure to train for the ebb and flow of life. We are told, “Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.” Job 5:7. Knowing this it is good to check the manual and ask, what will I do if… or even better, When!
A financial fiasco, relationship or health crisis may arise at any moment, yet through a grasp of the truth of God’s word we can increase our chance of survival by knowing the drill for any particular life event.
