I read a vignette about Ovid. Not Ovid Need, Publius Ovidius Naso, BC 43 to AD 17. Ovid is usually associated with love poems, some very lurid. A look at his life reveals much more about this Italian from the Last and First Century. I was surprised when I read the following line attributed to him.
“Dripping water hollows out stone, not through force but through persistence.”
The concept of persistence is taught throughout literature and the Bible certainly teaches the value of persisting until the objective is achieved. The Bible itself is considered a tool of those who persist. Notice Jeremiah 23:29, “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
Preachers know from God’s Word that we are to persist, knowing that the pounding away using the wisdom and power of God’s Word will break the toughest obstacle into pieces. We also know that well doing may have the same effect. Galatians 6:9, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Thomas Palmer (1782-1861) wrote in his Teacher’s Manual lines that are nearly unforgettable; “Tis a lesson you should heed, try, try again. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.” The line needs repetition nowadays.
Wisdom is learning to persist toward ends that are scripturally honoring to Jesus Christ.
