Today completes the 49th year of the marriage of Joyce Gore to Larry (The Rascal) Lilly. I recall the day well. It was hot and through the day I ran the gamut of emotions, wishing 4:00 PM would hurry and get here, and the next minute, hoping all clocks would suddenly stop, to actually saying a prayer for Jesus to come.
Joyce was twenty minutes late for the ceremony. One clock actually had stopped. At 4:15 Pastor Howard VanCise attempted to comfort me. At 4:20 we heard a commotion and a woman rushed to the office announcing, “She is here.” We quickly took our places and the procession began.
As is expected at such events, it ended in a new marriage, one that had people on the church steps taking 3 to 1 bets that the new couple wouldn’t make it over six months. My own mother was offering the odds. I made up my mind that the marriage would last 7 months no matter what.
Thankfully our marriage was not a joke, but one where four children grew to maturity and are making their mark in life for Jesus. Three came to or near birth and went on home. Joyce turned out to be more interesting than I ever dreamed. Her apprehensions of the day have proven mild by reality. Yet, by God’s grace, we press on to fifty years.
Three realities have kept us going, Jesus, my fear that Joyce would commit hubbycide, and her sense of humor. To this day she laughs at my ideas. She is precious beyond words.
