OOTD Controlling a Bored Mind!

The other day I stopped to fuel up my 4 cylinder, but mighty, Ford Escape. The Pit Stop is just down the road from my office, so I’m in there two or three times a week. The line was longer than usual, so I browsed the wall where the permits etc. are posted. I noticed this note from the Owner/operator:

"Sometimes the thoughts in my head get bored and go for a stroll out through my mouth. This is never a good thing." Beth at the Pit Stop.

The regulars at the Pit have noticed that Beth does often seem to be vacuous. When people have gone through the rigors she has endured the last several years, this is understandable.
Most of us admit, though grudgingly, to the truth of our bored mind taking “a stroll through our mouth,” and boy, what a mess we can reap from such a trip. I can think of several times this has happened to… well never mind.

One of the marks of maturity as a Christian is to learn to keep the mind and heart under control and thus be known as a person who knows and uses “good” words. By good words I mean words that lift others up and communicate something sensible via the tongue or pen. I suppose somewhere some half brained scientist is working on a “Good Speak Tongue.” There will be a large market for it, especially during election cycles as I am certain politicians hate eating so many of their words. Preachers are not exempt from this meal though they seem to be far more reluctant to recant silly statements.

Plastic or chemical surgery applied to the tongue will not solve the problem of bored minds taking a trip on our tongue path. The correction according to Jesus lies lower, in the heart!
Notice this truth from the Creator, the one who knows the engineering of the human:

Luke 6:45 "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
John 7:38 "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."

By paying attention to this teaching of Jesus, we can permit the organ that expresses what’s going on inside of us to roam at will, confident that it, being filled God’s ideas, will have good things to say! Pastor Al Ray has often said, “The tongue is the dipstick of the heart!” And he is right. The tongue gives accurate measure of the level of the “Oil” of the Holy Spirits control in our mind and heart.

It’s good to spend a little, even a lot of time, soaking in the Word of God and praying for a clean, vibrant and peaceful heart. And then if our mind takes a stroll, it will usually still speak the thoughts of God through our tongue which does not have a mind of its own.

According to Paul it’s a good thing to “let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”
