Since the early days of my conversion to Jesus Christ I have heard the name, Gypsy Smith, fall from the lips of several famous pastors, preachers, and literary luminaries. As I stated in the November article, Rev. Gypsy Smith was born in a tent near, London. He became a Christian at an early age, became friends with Ira Sankey, the singer who was used dramatically in the worldwide ministry with D.L. Moody.
Rather than apologizing for his lack of formal ministerial training, Gypsy capitalized on the truth of the enabling power of the Holy Spirit and stunning power of the message being of more import than mere parchment hanging on a wall.
Rev. Smith was used in mighty ways to bring many to faith in Jesus Christ, and this brought out the Green-Eyed Monster, Jealousy. I can understand why men and women of the cloth, paying dearly for the Sheepskin, hanging on their wall, were outraged that God would use a man from the unwashed masses to reach more for Jesus than had all of them put together.
Gypsy, being the humble servant of THE Servant simply said:
“The way to Jesus is not by Cambridge and Oxford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London
Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Socrates, Plato, Shakespeare or the poets--
It is over an old-fashioned hill called Calvary.” Gypsy Smith.
Whether we have earned degrees, honorary ones, or merely studied at Saint Mary’s, as did Harry Ironsides, it will be a grand day when we recognize the awesome power of the Holy Spirit in ministry. The power is the anointed message!
