Many churches spend a vast amount of time bemoaning the desertion from the church by the young. Still, others wail at the lack of consistency among the young that do attend. The poor young are bewildered by the fact that serious churches are less than thrilled at the lack of faithfulness on display by the young congregants.
What’s at the root of the problem? I don’t know!
Wait, that’s not all!
I have a few ideas that are biblically based and therefore give “it” to both sides.
“The church has been more obsessed with the youthful spirit than the Holy Spirit.”
Most every aspect of modern society asserts or implies that there is something very terrible about being; “Old.” And many of us “codgers” fall into the trap with all sorts of surgery, hairpieces that look like cheap carpet from Sears, clothing that presents stupidity more than youth, ad infinitum. I must not mention many older cats with the morals of alley felines. This doesn’t touch the hem of the garment of failure in large part for many Christ professors to demonstrate a “better” way to the group coming along. I know, I know, they should follow Christ, but Paul did say to “follow me as I follow Christ.”
I shall not rant of the foibles and other shortcomings of the fresh-faced mob right behind us. They are pretty much like every generation of bright, but spoiled, youngsters throughout history. Plato credited the following to Socrates:
"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place
of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their
households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They
contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties
at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”
Not all that much has changed but Praise the Lord we are still here!
