Being a person of lofty dreams and low achievement, I admire men and women who are able to actually realize their dream and climb their mountain, literally or figuratively. Whether figurative or literal, the principles are the same. A wise man of yesteryear proclaimed “men who never build castles in the air, never build castles anywhere.” We will be hard pressed to find truer words.
As we march bravely into 2015, or as will many, tiptoe in a vain attempt to make it safely to the grave, we can do this with hope and dreams in our hearts or barely whimper and plod on, enduring a zombie like existence. The choice is ours to make.
Over the years, years of failure and also of achievement far beyond the wildest dreams of my days of youth, I have always held some impossible dream close to my heart and some of the dreams, beyond my grasp, have been given to me by Jesus Christ.
When Joyce and I were married over 50 years ago we did not have the proverbial snowballs chance of a 50 year marriage, but here we are safely past the half century mark! It surely is no secret what God can do.
A verse, loaded with thought, has helped us over the years to “get the new look from the old book, get the new look from God’s word.” This truth is encapsulated in
Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
A thought in Dale Flynn’s weekly letter caught my attention with a statement about mountain climbers. I had heard the statement attributed to Sir Edmund Hilliary, but hard evidence is a wee bit lacking, so I am using a well-documented one from the grand climber of God’s hills, Sir Hilliary simplified mountain climbing and life with this:
“Life’s a bit like mountaineering, never look down.”
Good advice, and Paul gives it weight in Hebrews. As we attack the mountains in the path of our life, it helps to keep our eyes on Jesus, who is our author, (creator) and owns the rights to us as His poem. Ephesians calls us His workmanship. Eph 2:10.
On achieving dreams Sir Edmund said, “I am a lucky man. I have had a dream and it has come true, and that is not a thing that happens often to men.” Edmund Hilliary
In this year of our Lord 2015, may we who know Jesus trust Him more for the dreams and visions promised to the old and young men of faith.
