The people of the Spanish town of Valladolid erected a statue honoring Christopher Columbus. Columbus is atop a globe with an iron band encircling the globe with the inscription Non Plus Ultra. A Latin/Spanish phrase meaning “nothing beyond” or the apex. The idea of there is no more was tied to the Ocean and maps of the day that bore the inscription Beyond be Serpents.
The statue shows a Lion ripping off the first word, “Non”, in the phrase, noting that Columbus had demonstrated that there is more beyond.
It was true of the world, space and your life. There is always “more beyond.” The only Non Plus Ultra in your life is imaginary, a ceiling that you have permitted others to place in your life, or even more tragically, a self-imposed limitation.
An often overlooked reality in the Christian life is that because Christ lives, we live also, and according to Paul the Spirit that brought Christ out from among the dead is the same spirit that empowered our spiritual resurrection in our salvation, for we are told, emphatically, that we are raised with Christ and thus we walk in a new life.
Hebrews 13:20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Add to this Paul’s statement in Romans 8:11, “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
You will get the idea that if you are a Christian it is the Spirit of God working in you. An old country preacher had it right when he said, “If Jesus is in your heart, He cancels all the “caints” people can put on you.” Charles Wesley wrote this about canceled sin, canceled limits, in his magnificent song, O’ For a Thousand Tongues to Sing:
He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.
Stupid decisions, serious sins, gossip, attacks from Satan and a few from the brethren, may scream, LIMITED, yet the words of another country preacher helps to trust Jesus and move on. The old country preacher, commenting on Non Plus Ultra said, “You go home, get in your prayer closet, and ask the Lord Jesus to make you see that He, The Lion of The Tribe of Judah, has ripped the “Non’ from your life through His Blood, Spirit and Power, you are now Plus Ultra, Unlimited!”
