Do you ever wonder, “Why so much pain, even though I struggle to walk with the Lord?” I have pondered the pain of life, most of my adult life. Phillip Yancy commented on this with a grand statement:
“Only the megaphone of pain is strong enough to bring people to their knees and make them reconsider life.”
When things are running along well, we/I tend to become overly content and take things and people for granted. We are warned against this attitude by James 4:14, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
Not only is our life a vapour, but the lives of the people around us, those whom we hold dear, are also simply brief experiences. The truth of this is painful enough and we experience a certain pain at the mere thought. This may change to excruciating pain at any moment. A phone rings, and there’s been an accident, a sudden unexpected heart attack. Talk about searing pain.
I could, perhaps should, write a book based on many heartbreaking statements I have heard while attempting to comfort mourners at a viewing.
When all is said and done, life is precious, life is short, and life’s end is certain. But also certain is Christ’s love for us, and His provision for us now and then.
