LLLV18 6-7-2018 Jonathan Swift and Paul on Self Knowledge
Do you know your major weakness? How about your major strength? There is a vast gulf between the two and being aware of each helps to keep you from falling into the chasm!
Many people do learn to identify their weakness and spend time, talent and treasure attempting to be active in the known weak points. They usually fail and in so doing miss the benefits of identifying their strengths.
Suppose Peyton Manning spent his formative years attempting to become a Superstar as a Wide Receiver? He didn’t have the necessary physical gifts, speed, good hands, and the instincts outstanding receivers demonstrate in competition. It’s a good bet the best Wide Receivers would fail as a Quarterback.
Antwaan Randle El was a good college quarterback. However, he became one of the NFL greats as a wide receiver due to his less than stellar ability to play quarterback in the big time.
Here’s thought from a great writer and clergyman:
“Men are accused for not knowing their own weakness, yet, perhaps, as few know their own strength. It is in men as in soils, where sometimes there is a vein of gold, which the owner knows not of.” Jonathan Swift, writer, and cleric.
As we walk with Jesus, the Holy Spirit often reveals an untapped vein of gold in us that is made even stronger by the Holy touch, and we can shine for Jesus.
Paul wrote: Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (NKJV). The preceding verses describe some of the “all” things. He also wrote: Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, KJV.
While Paul accomplished many things, he knew the value of his remarkable gift. Due to experience, Paul would have been the primary person to reach Jewish people. He did reach some, but his “one thing,” not only reached multitudes of Gentiles in his day but by following his “beckoning star,” and writing 13 Epistles, four of which were written behind prison walls, he is still reaching and teaching millions today.
God does work in “Mysterious ways His wonders to perform!”
