John Milton on Liberty or License

LLLV18 8-30-2018 John Milton on Liberty or License

Many are the occasions where Paul’s admonition to stand fast for liberty rings long and loud as a metaphor for our liberty as Americans. I find no reason not to use this verse for admonishing we Americans to stand up for what has been bought with the red blood of brave men and women over the years.

The words of Paul were given to early Christian’s to stand for higher liberty. See what you think:

Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

Paul was insisting on Christians enjoying what is commonly called “Soul Liberty,” meaning Christians have a broad field to serve Jesus Christ without the hindrances many, especially in his day attempted to bind Christians to some touch not, taste not, idea of holiness. He emphasized in the previous chapters that the Law had performed its purpose in driving them to Christ for salvation, as that was the intent of God when He gave the Law to convict humans of sin, and offer forgiveness in Messiah, Jesus Christ.

John Milton, of Paradise Lost fame, gives a little help in a proper concept of Liberty, both national and spiritual:

“None can love freedom heartily, but good men: the rest love not freedom, but license.”
Liberty used in a contrary manner exposed by Milton and the Bible is license.

The point of today’s program is to ask you to take a long, lingering look in the Bible, seeing your use of Christian Liberty in the light of the Word and ask yourself; “according to this document, how am I doing?”

The gulf between the proper understanding and use of Liberty and Licentiousness is vast.

I especially liked Milton’s take on Liberty and License.

“Only ‘good” men can truly love freedom; others only use “freedom as a cover.”
