LLLV18 11-19-2018 Jesus On Using Power Gently
Have you noticed that some of the simplest sayings are easy to comprehend and often nightmarish to implement? Here’s a for instance, from the pen of Cousin Mel:
“The mixture of power with gentleness is rare but much needed in our time.”
Many writers have used similar phrases, and the Bible uses the concept throughout. It’s a good thing Jesus is gentle with His unlimited power. Have you ever considered the plight we humans would be in if Jesus Christ were a bully? His statement here assures of us His awesome power:
Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”
The word for all power, pâsa exousia, carries the truth of Authority meaning a legitimate use power even to the sword to ensure peace when necessary. I take no liberty by using the meaning from A.T. Robertson’s word study. Jesus Christ used and uses his infinite executive power to bless rather than brutalize the world.
Bullies, in whatever field do the exact opposite. Bullies from the strongest kid on the playground to the captains of multi-national corporations, often are mere bullies in the area of human relations. The same is true of many leaders in the field of religion. Most every group of religious people have some form of bullying in operation. Bullying is often expressed with a “toe our line or else,” the else being some painful things from shunning, excommunication, financial withholding to slanderous rumors.
The fear of losing the praise/approval of a religious leader has held many an otherwise profitable servant of Jesus back. Courageous leaders have paid a high price for being stalwarts of the faith.
There are men, who in Christlike humility, operate in the Authority of Christ in gentle ways. May their tribe increase.
From the smallest to the largest we hold some form of power over others. be right with God we must wield the scepter wisely for God’s glory and not our own.To
