LLLV18 4-26-2018 James Michener and Jesus on Respecting Culture
In today’s news, you often hear the term, Tribalism, an acceptable word meant as a put down to the unwashed masses who reject the erroneous concept of “Globalism.” Globalism is the code word for One World Government. To be sure there will be a One World Government, but it will have nothing in common with the so-called United Nations.
The question arises for world travelers and especially missionaries who reach various cultures different from our American ways and manners. Recently a group of young missionary prospects was overheard talking about the trip they had taken to an Aboriginal tribe in South America. The common thread of conversation was; “How in the world can people eat such garbage?” Effectiveness throws aside such thinking.
Over the years since I was fourteen, travel has been my dream life. I was prepared in some ways via at the ripe age of 15, living off the land in my hometown, eating basically from the trash, rotting food, thrown away behind the AP store and sleeping wherever I could lay my head. I lived. Then, after conversion to Christ, traveling far and wide to minister, and having widely varied “cuisine” placed before me with the phrase, Mrs. So&So makes the best____ in the world. While fighting nausea, the food would be eaten, with false enthusiasm, and praised. Would I order such back home at the Diner? Never! To be effective, I had learned not to offend in food or drink. My pastor, Dr. Tom Wallace, had taught and demonstrated the importance not hurting in such matters.
The late author, James Michener commented on the subject with this:
“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home.” James A. Michener.
The subject is covered explicitly in the early days of Christianity making a lasting impact on the world of the Gentiles by Peter following through on his vision concerning cultures and their food:
Acts 11:7 "And I heard a voice saying to me, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat.'”
The instructions effectively ripped away dietary barriers, opening the way to communicate the richness of the gospel of Jesus Christ efficiently.
