Over many years one arm of the ministry the Lord has entrusted to me is helping Christian men and woman who work in the army of the Lord as ministers, teachers, and even a few professors deal with a flaw, a weakness and in some cases a serious stumble along the way.
Of course the Bible is replete with passages, verses and examples of serious setbacks along the journey of numerous saints. The false information that when a person has a serious, infamous episode, well it’s really over for them. Actually, from a biblical perspective, nothing could be further from the truth.
Many people in all forms of endeavor wrongly assume and teach as a known fact that if such and such happens, it’s over.
In the aviation field it is assumed that if you were to somehow accidentally lose two feet off one wing, the rest of the airplane would simply carry you to the spot where, upon the impact of your landing, you would meet your maker face to face. The truth be known, most pilots, upon encountering such a situation, would proceed to the assumed inevitable meeting. Not so with Bob Hoover.
Bob has lead, and is continuing to lead, a tremendous life. A P-51 fighter pilot in WWII, Bob was shot down, captured and escaped from a POW camp, made his way to an airfield and took a mechanic at the field prisoner in the middle of the night. At pistol point Bob forced the mechanic to show him how the start a foreign plane and flew away to rejoin his group and continued to serve our nation with honor.
Bob has gone on to be one of aviation’s premiere characters bringing many hearts to the throat of those watching his impossible feats. Bob does more “tricks” with metal or fabric wings than an eagle would dare with feathers.
During a demonstration when Bob inadvertently clipped a power line losing two feet of wing, he calmly flew the P-51 to a perfect landing. The audience was amazed that he did not crash. His response was classic Hoover:
“Nothing said I had to crash.”
As we live life, we have many events, some leading to episodes. Well-meaning specialists assure us, even attempt to force us, into a flat spin and crash, never to rise again. Pay no attention to such, fix whatever is broken, get back in the plane of your life and get with it.
You may be the reader the Lord has in mind for this brief thought today. So, you somehow got your wing clipped, you’re not a bird, so accept the truth of forgiveness in Jesus Christ and continue in straight and level flight.
