Southern Daisy’s become lovers of Alaska, and members of the Frozen Chosen tribe to the far North get a hankering for sandy beaches. Jesus? Oh yes, Him. Well, we paid our dues!
In too many cases male retirees suffer along lines mentioned with true humor and meaning by H.L. Mencken with this quip:
“Nothing is so abject and so pathetic as a politician who has lost his job, save only a retired stud horse.”
H.L. was on the ball with this observation.
Over many years I have watched as vibrant seniors drop out of the race, pastors, missionaries and yes, a few politicians. As the old fire horse put out to pasture, they get that faraway look in their eye, and envision the usefulness of years now gone.
A pastor 10 years younger than myself retired and went on a few cruises, sent out numerous letters letting everyone know he was now ready for the new traces of service as a guest speaker. The poor man had been used of the Lord to gather a nice, actually rather large group around him. This was largely due to the influence of a few talented and well placed parishioners. He personally had/has all the charisma of President George Bush. No Edutainer here. Just plain old, plain old. I must not mention his current predicament, but I am working with him. Disillusioned would be a kind way of putting it. We are not made to lie on the beach or spend enormous amounts of time in some recreation. How do you recreate when you are worn out from recreating?
Thankfully, I have been the beneficiary of some whom upon retirement, simply jump in and get with a program of making a difference in the local church and in people’s life. One such is Richard Hugus, Rich will be eighty years along this year. What gigantic Christian servants he and his wife are in our church. Every time you look, there is one of them, going all out for Jesus. I had to really get on Richard for being on the roof of our annex fixing something. I did not want a man that age on the roof, else parishioners may get the idea that a man my age should also work on the roof. Richard has served as deacon for 28 years, as has Carl Smith, another retiree who always has his hand in something. We are blessed with several more saints who are making a mark in the pasture.
Do you believe the Bible? Get a good look at Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:” This is no dreamy eyed horse grazing in the pasture.
