Hot Seat or Hot Heart?

Forty years ago a successful man told me that in order to get maximum production from the leaders working with me and under my supervision I must put them on the hot seat. He meant to keep them in fear of me and of the consequences of their failure to perform as expected.

I found this approach to be nightmarish at best.

Bob Nelson posits a better way with this:

“You get the best efforts from others not by lighting a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within.”

In my line of service it is observable that more is accomplished through loving Christ and His mission than crawling in a paralyzing fear of eternal torment. Get me right I believe in eternal torment, yet that truth is not to be the motivating factor in my service to Christ. Focusing on the same vision as Christ intensifies the inner fire to do His will.

The inner fire comes under a number of terms, the one coming to mind as I write being enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is different than excitement as excitement comes primarily from external stimulus while enthusiasm is an English word coming from two Greek words, en, meaning in and theos meaning god, hence entheos, the god within. Christians lay claim to this power seeing we are sealed, indwelt with the Holy Spirit.

Today, I am a man indwelt with the Spirit of God. I will act thusly.
