Hero Defined
Oliver North wrote, “It has been my great blessing to spend most of my life in the company of heroes. By “hero” I mean a person who has wittingly put himself in grave physical jeopardy for the benefit of another.”
Colonel North added, “Heroes provide a moral and ethical framework and inspiration for the rest of us.”
So, aside from war, are there any genuine heroes in the world today? Yes, there are. Forget the sports, Hollywood and other stars. They may be accomplished at what they do, they may, as Lombardi said, “Leave it all on the field,” but the correct definition of hero isn’t in the mix. Yet, a hero need not be involved in a major, world changing battle of war.
It’s a man or woman laying aside a significant part of their life, a part they thoroughly enjoy, to work an extra job to pay the kids way through college in order to give them a better chance at life. It is a fireman going into a building being ravaged by fire and carrying a crippled, aged woman to safety, even though he learned that morning that the city or state has voted to snooker him out of his promised retirement. The list goes on, but America needs some real peacetime heroes.
My hero, Jesus Christ, said in John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
