Over the course of my allotted time on earth, I have been learning. One of the lessons I am learning more about is found in this gem from Herbert Bayard Swope:
“I can't give you a surefire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: Try to please everybody all the time.”
Mr. Swope was an interesting man to say the least. One of my observations of men and women who rise above the clutter of life to pinnacles we call success is that these specimens of the race waste little time in futile attempts to “please” everyone.
Jesus Christ is the prime example of conducting a “pleasing life.” True, He did not spend any time whatsoever attempting to please the insidious false religionists, which spent their energy attempting force Him into their humanly constructed mold. Jesus Christ demonstrates the stress-free life lived when we learn whom to please and the how of doing this. Note:
John 8:29 "And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him." (NKJV).
If we trust God we do not have to fear what individuals, groups, or the devil himself can do to us.
Paul dealt with pleasing the Lord in Hebrews 13:5;
“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
6 So we may boldly say: "The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?"
If pleasing people means acting, thinking or feeling in a manner that displeases God, then we must, at whatever cost, please the Lord. Simple, isn’t it? Ha!
If you worry about pleasing people due to the cost of not pleasing, pause and think of the enormous cost of displeasing our Heavenly Father.
