Jesus taught a lesson on fear paralysis in;
Matt 25:25 'And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.'
The verse is often used when talking about money, and I think that’s a fair use, but the primary meaning involves the proper use of the talent, whatever it may be, that God has given to each of us to use for His glory, the benefit of others and personal fulfillment.
We also learn the truth, that being afeared is not an acceptable reason.
This was brought home to me some time ago when I heard a friend singing in the church auditorium, when he thought no one was around. I asked; “How come I have never heard you sing in your church?” After more questioning he honestly told me; “Larry, I am afraid they will laugh at me.” (I have heard many sing etc in church whom I wish had such a fear). In spite of several long talks the man with a gift, is still hindered and afeared.
What about you? What is it that down deep you love to do, yet you are afeared to go for it.
Notice in our verse the man admits the talent he had hidden in the ground was the Lord’s. Burying money in a coffee can in the back yard is not the way to use money, if money is your gift. Nor is limiting a good voice to the confines of the shower proper in God’s sight. All good things come from above and are gifts to us from the Lord.
Fear has a stifling effect on all us, even the most famous in their field. For instance, take this from famous author, John Steinbeck;
“Oh, we can populate the dark with horrors, even we who think ourselves informed and sure, believing nothing we cannot measure or weigh. I know beyond all doubt that the dark things crowding in on me either did not exist or were not dangerous to me, and still I was afraid.”
JOHN STEINBECK, Travels with Charley: In Search of America. (Charley was his dog).
David is usually a good example on overcoming fear, you do recall that he did not let the fear of missing prevent him from slaying the giant, Goliath! David wrote when he was captured by the Philistines:
“Whenever I am afeared, I will trust in You.” Psalm 56:3
