Gordon McDonald on Accepting Compliments

A Short Time With Larry 1-5-2021 McDonald ADVICE

Gordon McDonald sent out a bit of advice on his 80th birthday. Here’s a gem:

“Receive compliments, criticism, and counsel with humility and appreciation. Avoid whining, complaining, self-pity. Assume that there is at least a grain of truth in the things critics say about you and your work.”

I am working on practicing at least the last line in his advice.

I have a lot of trouble assuming a “critic” could be correct in negative reviews. Who do they think they are?

Truth be known, we will get a more honest appraisal of our efforts from a critic than from a close friend or someone whose paycheck depends on us.

Here’s Paul, 2Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Even God critiques me!
