The other evening while listen to prisoner’s testimonies at WVCF one of the men, a positive Christian gave a testimony that grabbed everyone’s attention. It went like this:
“I been walking around with my lip all stuck out, feeling sorry for myself. Then I sit down and started counting my blessins. It weren’t long until I got over my sorry spell! I got my lip back where it belongs and started praisin Jesus agin.”
The men in my class at WVFC are in for more than just a spell and it always amazes me at how they manage to focus on Jesus and overcome the ever present “Specter of down” that accompanies incarceration.
One of the weapons they use is one that is available to all saints, whether in or out of prison. To count our blessings is a balm that works wonders whenever it is seriously brought to the fore of our thoughts. One of the blessings enumerated by our brother in chains, in his words, “I woke on this side of the grass this morning.”
Do you ever pause for a moment and simply thank the Lord for the gift of life?
As we walk the path called life, especially if we walk along with Jesus, we experience many wonders as He reveals the magnificence of it all. The wonder of living touches all the bases from the inexplicable beauty of a sunset to the cry of a newborn. The harmony of creation has been considered stupendous by the great minds of the ages.
Our life, body, soul and spirit was pondered by David when he wrote:
Psalm 139:14 “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.”
A few other verses on the subject in this Psalm give enormous comfort. Take a look at these:
Psalm 139:15 “My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.
17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them!”
The care the Lord has for us over-arches the ups and downs of life! Often we get so messed up that can’t believe God cares. Yet, experience and the scriptures rule out that kind of thinking, for the Lord is on record as caring, as the above and a multitude of other verses attest. Pity parties take wings and fly away when we take the time to focus on the many ways God cares for us in Jesus Christ. Charles Weigle had this to say with his song, No One Ever Cared for me like Jesus.
