Hardly a day passes but someone says, “Our country is in serious trouble!” I can’t argue with the conclusion. This is not new. In her magnificent patriotic hymn, Katherine Lee Bates coined this phrase, “America, America, God mend thine every flaw, confirm thy soul in self- control, Thy liberty in law.”
The plea of Miss Bates is to the heart of all sides of current issues, we sure need a mending of our very soul. Self-control, a virtue more associated with a distant past for it is the exact opposite of “if it feels good, do it.” And who among us can seriously argue that the liberty we have so long enjoyed is, as it should be, founded on the principle of everyone obeying the law, including our leaders.
The prophets of old proclaimed with hearts on fire and blazing tongues of a coming time of lawlessness. It appears the time is not only upon us, but becoming more so by leaps and bounds.
What can we do?
Well, we could try God’s solution found in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
Here’s another gem from Katherine: “It is the hour to rend the chains, the blossom time of souls."
Are you ready for Christ to “set your soul afire?”
