LLLV18 9-10-2018 George Whitfield and Larry on The Bible
The great evangelist of Colonial Time, George Whitfield stated:
“If we once get above our Bibles and cease making the written word of God our sole rule as to faith and practice, we shall soon lie open to all manner of delusion and be in great danger of making shipwreck of faith and good conscience.”
Comparing Whitfield’s statement to today’s (any day will work) headlines; can you grasp the prescient nature of his take on the importance the Bible played in his time and the lack of allegiance to the Word of God in our day?
Relatively few engage in an outright attack on God’s Word, they ignore the precepts in the Bible and do their thing. Men and women who have grown to adulthood with little or no biblical influence, are not the problem. They represent the bulk of humans down through the ages. They are called Gentiles.
The other type of ancient people were called Jews. God held the Jews to a higher degree of accountability due to their possession of the Word of God. When they, placed the Word of God in a high place in their belief, followed by daily practice of the precepts they were invincible. When they removed themselves from critical biblical concepts, they suffered defeat by their enemies, and their family life hit rock bottom.
In the Christian era, the same line of belief, cooling off to mere acquiescence, and a tip of the hat to God, the concepts, and errors of hell began to bring the home, the church and the nation down, a notch at a time until the whole is hitting bottom.
That our nation is in the “lip service” era is beyond question, and we are swiftly rocketing further down the slope. Many, “Sunday Morning is enough for me,” Christians fail to see the important part they are playing in this opera. Often this group is ignorant of fundamental principles laid out in God’s Word, the oft-repeated mantra,
“Well, you are aware aren’t you, that things have changed since biblical times?"
The fact is the human heart is the same today as it has been throughout history. Note God’s take on the heart matter:
Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”
The heart must be kept in check by the Word of God!
