For over fifty years my first response to trouble of any sort has been to seriously pray. Have my prayers always been answered? Yes and no. Often my prayers are overridden by God’s higher will.
That our nation is in trouble is beyond question and many have a frantic answer. I have no idea as to the mechanics of the solution, but I do believe the truth of the time worn verse God gave to Solomon in answer to the wise man’s prayer for wisdom. God did not send reams of cuts and entitlements and different officials ad infinitum. He gave this simple solution, in 2 Chronicles 7:14,
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
Along this line Os Guinness wrote:
“The story of Christian reformation, revival, and renaissance underscores that the darkest hour is often just before the dawn, so we should always be people of hope and prayer, not gloom and defeatism. God the Holy Spirit can turn the situation around in five minutes.”
In truth, we are only less than five minutes away from solutions to our personal and national peril. Whether we personally and nationally will actual put the formula into practice remains to be seen.
To turn from wicked ways is hard.
