Famous Coaches From My Youth

11-29-12  Famous Coaches From My Youth

I often recall the baseball and football coaches who made deep impressions on me at the time, and later in life. Buck Barnett and Mel Masonheimer are the names most mentioned, though both have gone on.

Another coach at a higher level put into words what every thinking coach desires in the performance and life of his/her players. Gentleman Tom Landry put it like this:

“A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, who has you see what you don't want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be.”

I must add, some coaches are able to help you to become the kind of person you never dreamed you could become.

Several of Buck’s and Mel’s boys went on to better things. Frank Stewart became a famous professional wrestler under the name Dutch Savage, along with being a preacher. Several others of us became preachers and wrestled with Deacons, Stewards, and Blonde wives along with the powers of darkness.

I identified with Frank as we came from brutal family backgrounds, and Masonheimer prevented us from actions that would totally ruin our lives. It took me years to overcome a planned action of rage that Coach prevented 56 years ago this Thanksgiving Day. Jesus uses people.

Psalms 32:8 “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

So how does that differ from what a preacher does ?
