LLLV18 7-23-2018 Demosthenes, Johnny Bench, and Larry on Excellence
While The Great Blonde was going through rehab the other day, I browsed an issue of Sports Illustrated. The teaser caught my attention, listing Sammy Sosa, Johnny Bench, Ahmad Rashad and Pete Rose as well as other sports luminaries under the heading, “Where are they now?”
Great articles and some brought a few tears to my old eyes.
A recent two-part article in my monthly journal shares eight essentials leading to victory in the Christian walk. The second essential, virtue, carries with it the concept of manliness, moral power as well as courage and excellence. I received enormous criticism for my emphasis on “excellence.” The Bible puts a premium on excellence. So does life in the winner’s circle.
When Baseball great, Johnny Bench was asked about becoming a manager he said:
“I don’t want to deal with incompetence. I played on a team that was the level of what it was. It’s hard for me to accept people who don’t make an effort, are not professional. The great thing in my life is, I don’t have to deal with them.”
Along the line of excellence in performance, Eddie Feigner, founder, and star of the King and His Court stated at the end of an exhibition game;
“Some people think a professional is a person who gets paid for playing ball. A true professional is one who practices his area of expertise every day!”
How different would your life be if you discovered your area of expertise and worked on perfecting it every day?
Demosthenes was considered the greatest Orator of the Ancient Greeks. His secret to grand oratory was the consistent practice of standing on the Seashore, with pebbles in his mouth, practicing diction and volume against the thundering waves. Along with this, he spent hour upon hour studying the subject he was going to speak on.
Could Paul have had something along the above lines in mind when he wrote this instruction to Timothy?
2Timothy 2:15 “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (NKJV).
The habit of study is part and parcel of every victorious life. No exceptions.
