D-Day God Style June 6, 1944

D-Day God Style             
Sixty nine years ago today several beaches in France became famous as the site of the largest amphibious invasion in history. D-Day, Operation Overlord, Omaha, Normandy, Utah Beaches were on the lips of every American. Failure of the operation was so possible as to be considered probable. So probable that General Eisenhower carried a failure note in his wallet. The note stated:

Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available. The troops, the air, and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.

Thankfully the note is a mere historical “might have been.”

  Editor’s note: It’s refreshing to remember that genuine American leaders accept blame.

Thinking about D-Day set me to searching for the note God prepared in case of the failure of His invasion of Earth to set the souls of men free. I am reasonably familiar with the Bible, and found no such note. Google drew a blank. I even consulted the Great Blonde, and zilch!

It seems that God is more patient than Eisenhower and has spent a lot of time persuading the enemy to surrender. But at a time known only to him, the coming greatest invasion is scheduled, led by Christ THE Lord.

Almost all the WWII veterans are dead now. We only have a short time left to thank them, then it will be like talking about Revolutionary War veterans, none to join in the conversation.

Imagine for a moment that you are in a landing craft reaching the beach. You can hear the machine-gun slugs slamming into the gate that is about to drop. The ringing is deafening. You hope you're close in enough to wade, because you have enough gear to drag your head under in a second.

You remember the only rehersal for this, the year before, which was a total failure and almost all 800 men involved drowned.

Though the odds are stacked heavily against you, you know the mission has to succeed, because if it fails there is no way another boat will be sent to pick you up and take you back. It's literally do or die. If the others don't give it their all, this is the day you die.

Then the gate suddenly drops. The slugs are coming in and those ahead of you are blocking your exit. The Second Lieutenant in the front is now tripping men with his corpse, and you can't tell if the men falling are hit or tripped.

But you know, for a certainly, that those back home are praying for you. For your success isn't just for you. If this mission doesn't succeed, the war, and every one and every thing you hold dear, is lost.

Now you're running and screaming up the beach, watching men fall ahead of you, and never knowing if this step is your last. But that isn't your biggest worry. You know you must succeed today, because everyone you love and hold dear depends on this single mission. Failure is not an option.

Now you un-imagine. That wasn't you. That was someone else. A long time ago. Perhaps a Grandfather, or someone else's. But someone did that. And because they did, your world is great.

You see them from time to time, sitting in their wheel chairs in the nursing home, seldom visited, waiting to die.

And soon they will. Behind their faded eyes,do they ever recall the pain and suffering, the panic and terror, the desperate prayers and the grief for the friends that didn't make it? And do they ever wonder if anyone really appreciates it?

If so, they won't wonder long. Soon they will sit in front of a panel and answer questions like
"You don't want to be a burden to your family, do you ? Check YES if you want to continue to be a burden to your family. "
"You don't want to be a burden to your country, do you ? Check YES if you want to continue to be a burden to your country. "
"Is your quality of life high?"
"On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being ... "
