It cannot be denied that the Christmas Season is here. An old legend has it that this season, above all seasons, it the absolute best. Mentally, I believe this evaluation. Emotionally, I have never been able to really get with it. With age I have learned to cope with the season, and thus avoid the Scrooge reaction to the season, as well as life itself.
Dale Evans said to me one time when we were talking about the morose misery I suffer during the season:
“Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.”
I read her statement the other day and the truth of what she said to me came back like a flood.
The Advent stories give a clear revelation of the immeasurable depth of God’s love to us, freely given in Christ. Thus we know of a coming time of absolute peace on earth and genuine goodwill to men. In the current existence we can enjoy the inner peace of His presence, thus putting to rest warring passions within our hearts. This current experience is a window into the future life when swords have been beaten into plowshares; we gather down by the river of life and study war no more.
We can and should trust His promises about the future.
Luke 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
