The concept of Idolatry is nearly as old as time, though it took material form in the era beginning in Genesis 4. Due to the fall of Adam, the human race was plunged into a progressive darkness marked by an ever increasing foolishness.
Today will pay great spiritual dividends by keeping in mind the definition of idolatry, thus discerning we may be in the grip of some form of idolatry.
Idolatry #2 “The giving of absolute religious devotion and ultimate trust to something that is not God.” Webster
The old divines understood the truth of Jonathan Edwards statement, “The ideas and images in men’s minds are the invisible forces which control them.” This idea gained much twisted ground with the publishing of Maxwell Maltz’s book, Psycho-Cybernetics, emphasizing the power of visualizing something as already achieved. This is a very dangerous practice to anyone not familiar with scripture. Here’s why:
“Whatever controls us is our lord. The person who seeks power is controlled by power. The person who seeks acceptance is controlled by acceptance. We do not control ourselves. We are controlled by the lord of our lives.” Rebecca Manley Pippert.
Dr. Maltz noted cybernetics as the ancient Greek concept of an inner “steersman,” a pilot.
As the Pilot steers the ship along the safe course, we must be certain, via God’s Word, that we are controlled by the Holy Spirit.
