Many prisons around the world use Solitary Confinement, as a means of punishment, or to merely constrain a prisoner who is upset about something. It works well with men or women who are already empty inside. It has little to no effect on the ones who have at least a little faith in Christ. To others who have inner strength via their cause, it also has little effect. It destroys those who get their insight and energy from others.
Concerning the adverse effects of solitary, or being alone, an anonymous wag stated:
“If you can't stand solitude, perhaps you bore others too!” Anonymous.
Modern civilization is so structured that it’s almost impossible to find “alone” time. The benefits of time alone is vastly underrated. Learning to tune out the TV and other media takes a strong will, to say nothing of the friends riding along in the car with you, who are committed to making sure you know of every heroic deed they have ever done. There are many ‘saviors of the nation” that the nation has somehow overlooked!
Here’s an interesting aside on the difference between being lonely and solitude:
“Loneliness expresses the pain of being alone, and solitude expresses the glory of being alone.” Paul Tillich.
So, when you are alone are you enduring the pain or enjoying the glory?
Jesus Christ spent much time being alone to pray, either in a garden or on a mountain. Others had “alone time” with God.
In today’s world, prayer is not counted worthy unless there are significant numbers, mostly using their voices to prayerfully gossip about what’s wrong with the world, the president and most everyone else.
The great ideas, discoveries, and inventions that have changed our world for the better have come mainly from men and women who were alone when the light flashed.
Influential theologians have written of the Apostle Paul being alone in the Arabian Desert for seven years during which time he was given the sum meaning of Jesus Christ and the New Testament. He verified this experience with James, Peter, and John.
Instead of noise to “block out” loneliness, learn to embrace such time as a gift from God to you for the growth of the inner you.
