LLLV14 7-10-14 Beware the Turned Eye
While searching for a quote to fit my sermon on how Joshua dealt with change in his life I stumbled upon this:
“Satan turned Eve’s eye to the apple, Achan’s eye to the wedge of gold, Ahab’s eye to Naboth’s vineyard, and then what work did he make with them.” Joseph Alleine.
Pastor Alleine embraces three sermons which to do justice would take six Sundays. Each sermon would have the same point as the other two, the importance of where we “turn our eye,” a metaphor for desire. The turned eye of the above named cost each far more than they ever dreamed and each involved a clear violation of God’s known will and instruction. Their unbridled desire also caused the suffering, even death of many innocents. In Eve’s case the human race, Achan, thirty six soldiers and Ahab involved the loss of his kingdom and his life.
The turned eye was inflamed via coveting something good, but forbidden. Our current generation assumes that any “good thing,” basically defined as anything they want, is therefore rightfully theirs for the taking. This “eye” turned from the will of God is at the root of the current downfall of Western Civilization.
Important to you is this: What, or who, is it that has “turned your eye” from the will of Christ concerning you?
Jude 1:21, “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”
